THE STORY:
On a road trip last summer, I discovered an extraordinary antique quilt in the small town of Grants Pass, Oregon. It was past its useful life as a blanket (I can only imagine the picnics it hosted and children it comforted over the years), but the level of detailed handwork was so exquisite I had to adopt it. Neat little handstitches everywhere, and hundreds of tiny fabric patches expertly pieced together. I made myself a cozy coat from it — as cheesy as it sounds, it really does feel like wearing a hug.
But I couldn’t bear to throw out the scraps that were left. Every patch — kittens playing with balls, jaunty seahorses, polka dots and stripes and floral and plaid — tells the story of saving and cherishing and making a precious heirloom that has lasted at least 80 years.
So the scraps have become these tree ornaments, and I hope you will buy one. We hear Shop Small all the time, so I’m just adding my voice to the chorus: it does matter where you spend your money, especially during the holidays. It makes a statement no less profound than, “what kind of world do I want to live in?”
I want a world where artists, small shops, and yes, quilters, can thrive in the fabric of commerce and community. I think you do too. Thank you for reading, and for helping support a small business that is always steadfastly working to keep the lights on.
Will your little quilt tree last forever? Maybe not. Will it endure longer than anything you buy on Amazon? It already has.
